Suillus lakei and S. caerulescens are among the most common fall boletes under Douglas-fir, often occurring together, and frequently in the company of Gomphidius oregonensis. S. lakei has a reddish to red-brown or orange-buff, dry to viscid, fibrillose-scaly cap, a veil that leaves a distinct ring-zone, and a stipe that is yellowish above, colored like the cap below, and without glandular dots. The tubes are rather large and angular, sometimes elongated, some shade of yellow, and typically stain reddish brown when bruised. The flesh of the stipe base sometimes turns bluish when exposed. S. lakei has sometimes been placed in the genus Boletinus.
